English Essay Competition 2018
Cash Prizes and Scholarships To Be Won!
There'll be two categories:
Students in Category A (Aged 10 to 12 years old) will be required to write an essay of 250 to 350 words on "Should you spend your money now or save for the future?"
Students in Category B (Aged 13 to 15 years old) will be required to share their ideas on the topic of "Should you spend your money now or save for the future?" in a 400 to 500 word essay.
All Essay submissions must be in the English language and the dateline time and date are on or before 11.59 pm, 29th July 2018. Only digital submissions via are allowed
Students selected for the final stage of the competition will be required to make themselves available for an onsite essay writing examination on the 8th of September 2018, at Q Akademi Centre in
Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur.
All finalists will be notified via website and email by the 20th August 2018.
Who may enter the competition?
This Competition is open to all students in public or private schools in Malaysia. Homeschoolers are also
welcome to compete.
How to submit the essay
The essay must be submitted in two (2) formats (PDF and Microsoft Word) via Q Akademi’s website ( )
What is the format of the essay
Essays must be between 250 to 350 words in length in Category A whilst essays in Category B must
be between 400 to 500 words in length.
All essays must be in English, typed double spaced, using Arial font 11, with numbered pages in MS
All entries must be original. No previously published material will be accepted. Any form of
plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification. Please note that all essays will be screened with
special software to verify plagiarism.
Each entry must have a cover page with the
- Student’s name
- Student’s age
- Student’s school name
- Student’s current level of education (Std/Form/Level)
- Student’s full mailing address
- Student’s Telephone number and e-mail address
- Student’s Parent’s name, telephone number and e-mail address

How will the essays be judged
The essays will be judged using the following 5 criteria :
- Proper Use of Language
In addition, judges will be evaluating essays for :
- Strong style and personal voice. Students are encouraged to include personal examples and insights.
- Originality and clarity of content and ideas.
About the deadline
The deadline time and date are on or before 11.59 pm, 29th July 2018.
Ownership of Intellectual Property (the essay)
By participating in this Competition, each participant grants Q Akademi sole absolute, unequivocal and
irrevocable ownership and/or intellectual property right over the essay and contents thereto.
Winning entries may be published by Q Akademi in any of its publications, subject to the usual editorial
Announcement of winners
The essay winners will be contacted via personal notification through e-mail, website and/or telephone.
What are the prizes
1st prize - RM500 cash, Q Akademi Scholarship valued at RM15,000 + certificate
2nd prize – RM300 cash, Q Akademi Scholarship valued at RM10,000 + certificate
3rd prize – RM200 cash, Q Akademi Scholarship valued at RM6,000 + certificate
5 Consolation Prizes x RM100 cash each + Q Akademi Scholarship valued at RM3,000 + certificate
Terms and Conditions of
Q Akademi English Essay Writing Competition 2018
Eligibility and Condition of Entry
o Malaysian students (aged 10 years to 15 years) from government and independent
schools in Malaysia are eligible to enter the Q AKADEMI ENGLISH ESSAY WRITING
COMPETITION 2018 (hereafter ‘Competition’).
o All entries must be in English and submitted online. No written hardcopy
submissions will be accepted.
o Submission deadline: on or before 11.59 pm, 29 July 2018. Essays received after
the deadline will be automatically deemed ineligible.
o By submitting the entry, the participants covenants to the Organisers that:
The participant is the author of the submitted work;
The submitted work is original and unpublished;
He/She has read and agreed to be bound by the terms and conditions of this
All the information provided are true and accurate;
To bear any consequences (including automatically be disqualified from
participating in this Competition) in the event of his/her breach of any
covenants as set out hereof.
o The intellectual property rights of the submitted essays will be assigned to Q
Academy Sdn Bhd and/or Q Akademi (hereafter ‘Organisers’) and the Organisers
reserve the right to reprint the essays in any format without compensation.
Appropriate citations may be given to writers.
o Category A entries – The minimum word count is 250 words and maximum
words count is 350 words.
o Category B entries – The minimum word count is 400 words and maximum
words count is 500 words.
o Any essays that do not meet the minimum word count will be disqualified.
o Each participant is allowed to submit one essay only.
o All essays submitted during the online submission will not be returned.
o Winning entrants are expected to show originality and flair, and competent use of
English as a written language. This includes a good standard of spelling, grammar
Conditions of Finalists / On-Site Finals
o The Organisers will make every reasonable effort to notify the finalists via e-mail
to participate in a sit-down essay competition, which will be held on 8th September
2018 at Q Akademi premise.
o Finalists must participate in the sit-down essay competition to be eligible for
consideration of either the consolation or top three awards. The selected finalists
who do not participate in the sit-down essay competition will be automatically
o Finalists are responsible for their own accommodation and travel cost to the
location of the sit-down essay competition.
o All essays submitted during the sit-down essay competition will not be returned.
o Only finalists who attended the sit-down will receive a certificate of participation.
Conditions for Winners (8 Winners from Category A, 8 Winners from Category B)
o The Organisers will make every reasonable effort to notify the 16 winners via
email to collect their prizes.
o The Organisers reserve the right to request written proof and age of any
Competition winner before the prize is dispatched or collected.
o The winner agrees to allow Q Akademi and its advertising and promotional
agencies to publish his/her name and/or photographs and/or winner’s participating
photographs and/or essay or any parts thereof without further compensation and
o The Organisers reserve the right to substitute prizes that have an equal or greater
monetary value than the prizes offered in the Competition notice. Prizes that
remain unclaimed by the winners within 30 working days from the day of the prize
notification (via e-mail) will be forfeited and thereafter, the Organisers shall have
no obligation to substitute any alternative prize, cash equivalent or other
compensation to the winners.
Conditions for Scholarship (hereafter ‘Scholarship’)
This Scholarship is subject to the fulfilment of minimum entry requirements of applied
programme by the winners. Minimum entry requirements are determined by assessment
tests conducted by Q Akademi.
This Scholarship is not transferable or exchangeable for cash.
This Scholarship is to be used as semester fee waiver for IGCSE programmes at Q
In the event that another Scholarship or scholarship is awarded to the recipient at Q
Akademi, the recipient will be entitled to only ONE Scholarship.
Q Akademi reserves the right to alter, add or delete any of the terms and conditions and
the scholarship scheme at any time as and when Q Akademi deems necessary.
Q Akademi reserves the right to involve the scholarship recipients in interviews,
advertisements, photography or other publicity related activities for the purpose of
promoting Q Akademi.
– The Organisers will not be responsible or liable for:
I. Any delay and/or failure in participating in this Competition due to any reason beyond the
control of the Organisers; or
II. Any injury, loss, problem, damages or costs of any kind suffered resulting from participation
in this Competition or as result of accepting or utilising the prizes awarded.
I. Judges’ decision is final and not subject to appeal. No correspondence will be entertained.
II. The Organisers reserve the right to amend, terminate or add on to the terms and conditions at
any time by placing a notice at the relevant website or any designated area.
